For many, the notion of being a writer is romantic and coveted in such a way that when the reality becomes unobtainable and slips into oblivion, they blame anyone and anything but themselves. But alas they’re also set up to believe that writing is within us all… Let’s face it, they’ve been fed a load of crap.
I can’t count how many times I’ve heard someone speak about their undying passion and innate drive to write. They speak of having to purge themselves of the stories from within….
Blah Blah Blah…What a pile of bunk.
It’s all a ruse I tell you…a ruse.
Writing is frikken hard work. Don’t kid yourself. Don’t be lolled-in by this idea of “passion”.
It takes dedication, knowledge of craft, and a whole ton of energy to keep it going.
A passion implies an individual has such a strong and intense drive that can’t be controlled or reined in. To be taken up by such a passion further implies that nothing else matters and regardless of worldly distractions, writing is the priority.
To have such a passion for writing is not only unrealistic but a fairytale sold by those who see themselves as being special and chosen or presented by those who are laying down a challenge for a future “I told you so…”
Writers beat themselves up enough. They don’t need to have this unobtainable thing like “passion” hanging over them with thoughts of never being able to measure up.
Listen, I love to write. I love to create, finish projects, read, and constantly learn about the craft, business and all its people and quirks.
But, as a writer I also like to procrastinate, whine, deviate from the plot, write in my head, and tell myself that I suck.
If you want to be a writer, sit your ass down in a chair and write.
If you don’t think you’re any good then take a class or ask questions. Be open to learning and growing.
Don’t rely on some bullshit “passion” to sweep you off your feet and into a magical land of best selling writing.
It is NOT going to happen. If you start with a passion, remember that it will wane and fade–just like any passion. It is up to you…and only you….to get to it.
Off you go. The dose of reality has been delivered.

Absolutely! This reminds me of the advice some self-proclaimed gurus like sharing: “Have a passion and money will follow.” If it worked that way, many of us would be millionaires.
The truth of the matter, as you mentioned it so eloquently, is that it takes hard work and dedication to succeed as a writer. And it’s even more difficult when you are a poet. lol

Needed this inspiration today. Its ridiculous at times how much I procrastinate. I make so many plans to get different pieces of writing done and before I know it, the days over and it’s time to make dinner. Then I have other times where I’ll sit there and write for hours and you cant get me outta the chair lol. Usually reading something like this helps do the trick of getting my ass in motion. Thanks for sharing!

I am wondering if there is a difference between having a passion for writing and a passion for having your writing published? I know many people (myself included) who write and write and write simply for the joy of it, and in the process become increasingly skilled and passionate writers—but they do it for love of writing. They may or may not publish, but even if they do, it’s more of a perk. Maybe this conversation about passion depends on how you define it?
Hi Norma. Thanks for stopping by. Yes. It totally makes a difference on how you choose to define passion. Here I was looking at that *need*, that lust, if you will…you HAVE to do it…its so within you that the “passion” won’t let you do anything else. It is all you think about.
So I agree. Many writers become very skilled not only at writing but also in time management, self esteem, drive to succeed etc.
I love the perks of writing. I love writing. I love spewing. But this idea of it being a “passion” is overblown (in my opinion).
I think we all need to define who we are within our own boundaries of life.
