Hi All. I hope you’re all enjoying Poetry Month.

In the beginning of the month, I committed to writing ten poems. I made that promise without much thought, but now realize just how much of a commitment it is.

Poetry is not easy–or at least, it isn’t for me.

When I write a story, there’s a character and goings-on that I can manipulate and spice up. Poetry though is so intrinsically personal and telling. As much is said by the missing words in a poem, as there is being shared not the page.

It’s really interesting because the interpretation can be deeply personal to whomever reads it, or be a fluff of words that make no sense.

Last night, I was honored to go see author Elizabeth Gilbert (Eat, Pray, Love) speak about writing, creativity, and living your truth.

It was fabulous. Identifying with so many things she spoke of came through in the context of this latest poem.

This morning, this is what fell out from the end of my fingers. It’s what it is. The words are now in the Universe and real. I hope you enjoy.

define the edge

no longer will there be
a line
drawn in the sand

pliable. lenient. too easily
obliterated
to accommodate others

strength. now drawn from
within
boundaries loom limitless

deeply driven into the
foundation
a cornerstone of the soul

solid. authentic. eyes open.
awareness
safety. stability. trust-of-self

respect exacted by invitation
shut-out
to toxicity. loathing. negativity.

precious energy salvaged from
tides
who want without giving

no dues. no explanation required
for
self-preservation. peace. joy.
