So my little spill on the park pathway really screwed up my plans.
Yesterday I just returned from Vancouver where I travelled specifically for my sisters Celebration of Life. I’d planned on staying on the coast and doing some visiting, but pain had a different plan.
It was just a fall. That’s all. Nothing major. Heck, I even continued on my walk after brushing off the embarrassment of having fallen in the first place. Ugh.
Here’s the thing though, pain sometimes doesn’t show up right away and it has a sneaky way of radiating, stabbing, and frikken taking you down when you least expect it.
My pain is localized to the right ribcage, outer arm, shoulder, and armpit. I feel like such a whiney baby.
Here are five things I’ll never take for granted ever again…
ONE:
Drawing in a deep breath. OMG…. owwwwie…. 😖😖
TWO:
Coughing or sneezing. Oh my, don’t do it…. no, no, no… 😩😩
THREE:
Putting on a bra. Doing up a zipper. Putting a shirt on over your head. Pulling on a sock… You get the idea. 😖
‘Nuf said.
FOUR:
Driving. 🚙🚙🚙
Now this one is what tanked the week for me. When hubby and I left to go to Vancouver last week, every little turn, bump, or stop sent throbs of pain through my ribs. Damn.
I had to take three… yes, three, muscle relaxers to manage as a passenger.
Sigh… 💊💊💊
Being the driver didn’t work either.
I don’t have the flexibility right now to turn. Heck for the first couple of days after my fall, I had to press the start button on my car by reaching over with my left hand. Same for shifting–my right arm was weak with pain.
Lord, that sounds so dramatic, but imagine someone shoving a screwdriver into your side as you try and do a shoulder check.
Okay. Okay. So no driving. Being a passenger sucks too. This whole thing sucks. I’m a wingey baby. 😭👶
FIVE:
Getting out of bed or heaven forbid–turning onto your side.
ohhhhhhh….. crazy, stupid, triggers. Like, I’d never thought of rolling over in bed could ever cause so much discomfort.
I’d stop half way and consider the outcome. It’s like having a debate with yourself every time I wanted to move. Conclusion… It simply wasn’t worth it–the moving If mean.
I’m done…So No More…
There. I feel like I’ve had my wee rant and will now let it go.
If you live with chronic pain, my heart breaks for you. 💔
No matter where it is in your body, the mental exhaustion of having to constantly acknowledge it is life-changing. If you’re in that boat, I sincerely pray for your recovery and relief. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Try and stay positive.

I live with chronic pain but it doesn’t normally affect my ribs – until two weeks ago when I fell and bruised my ribs! So I know exactly what you mean. Hope you are feeling better soon!
Oh Michelle. I’m so sorry to hear that! I don’t know how anyone does it. I feel like such a whiney baby. Wishing you well. xo 💕
Ouch! Sorry you’re going through that, Faye! Did you get an x-ray to make sure you have no hairline fractures?
Thx for your kind words Zena. No didn’t go to Dr. My research basically showed that it was soft tissue and would take 4-6 weeks to heal 😩. I just don’t know how anyone can live with chronic pain. So many have it worse. I’m getting there. Slow and steady. xo
Oh that’s terrible. We do take small things for granted, don’t we. Take care, Faye. ❤️
Oh Heather! It’s so true that we take so much for granted. Such simple everyday tasks. It’s a slow healing process for sure. I’m getting there. xo 💕
After four cracked ribs, I’d say that’s what you’ve got. Doesn’t matter though what the cause is when the pain erupts during simple, normal activities. Not much of a cure for cracked or bruised ribs anyway. Other than rest and waiting on nature’s healing process. But I hear you. Does give a person more appreciation for chronic pain sufferers. I guess that’s compensation of a sort, and keeping our eyes on the path ahead. Literally and figuratively. Don’t laugh. Or cough. That’s the hard part, especially for a joyous, expressive person like yourself. Best wishes for steady recovery. Big hugs.
Hi Dianne. I fear you may be correct. A benign little tumble and boom… flippin’ unreal. And you’re right, it’s def put me on my heels and slowed me down in many ways. Sometimes we need to heed the lessons and thus I shall do. I never want this again. I’m a baby and I need bubble wrap. lol. Thanks for your kind words Dianne. xo 🥰
That sounds terrible! I’m so sorry you’re experiencing this. I hope you get some relief soon <3 thinking of you!
Hi Erin. Yes. This whole experience sucks! No kind way to put it unfortunately. It’s kind words like yours though that keep me sane. I so appreciate it. Lesson learned and I never want to do this again. I’m going to ignore it now and not give it anymore power (lol… until I need to put a shirt over my head 🤣) Ugh… gotta have a sense of humor. Stay well my friend. 🥰
Ouch – hope you feel better soon. Take lots of care!
Yes. I’m definitely on the mend. Thank you. I definitely consider it a lesson learned.
