Weekend Roundup! Valentine’s Day Alternatives, Taking it Easy, and Catching up

Hi All. It’s Great to See You All Here.

It’s been quite a while since I did a weekend roundup. Phew… It’s funny how time goes so quickly and life distracts me from doing what was once a weekly thing.

I’m here now though and glad you are too.

The weekend is upon us. I don’t know how it works for you, but my weekend is very much like my week days. When my son was young the weekends were a big thing. There were always many activities that kept us busy and the break from the weekly routine was very pronounced.

Now, I work from home and keep my own schedule. If I want a weekend retreat… I don’t necessarily wait for the weekend. In my life right now, Tuesday is the same as Saturday…

Am I alone in that? Are you still focused on weekends? I’m curious.

Sigh… Yes, Valentine’s Day.

This is not my favourite day and I always feel bad for those who are left out, deprived, ignored, or feel lesser-than because they don’t have that “special someone”. Ugh…

Perhaps you can tell I don’t have the best memories of February 14th. It was fun as a kid. Giving out Valentine’s cards to the whole class and receiving them back, but there comes a point where it becomes more about being left out, than the inclusion.

In school, Valentine’s Day always seemed so special for those who were popular, pretty, and had that significant other (I never fit into any of those groups). It was just another ordinary day that wasn’t ordinary at all… Many were left on the sidelines by no fault of their own.

Change It Up…

To me this day marks one of the first huge commercial undertaking of the calendar year. The stores clamor for the customer’s money for all the same things–cheap waxy chocolate, sugar laden candy, and long-stemmed roses being sold at inflated prices. Let’s not forget the sometimes guilt imposed purchases of diamonds, lingerie, and romantic get aways.

Okay. Okay. I’ll admit for some that the day can be, and is, special but it’s not for everyone. IMHO the day seriously needs to be revamped and reconfigured.

Let it be about little kids. Do the crafts and make a special heart cookie…great. Don’t let it be about pressure to do, buy, or be something simply because of societal influence.

But since we can’t change for this year, why not try something a bit different? If you want to celebrate, but are single, make your own rules and redefine what Valentine’s Day is for you.

Here are some ideas…

  1. Buy your own chocolate. Go splurge and get the really good stuff.
  2. Send flowers to the office for yourself, just because.
  3. Order in. Make sure you get dessert too.
  4. Send your single friends a special Valentine loaded with love and chocolate.
  5. If you know a single mom, send her an extra special Valentine too. (see #4)
  6. Phone in sick and spend the day reading, lounging, or sipping lovely lemon water.
  7. Get together with a group of single friends and embrace your single status.
  8. Realize you’re not alone in the pining for love, affection, and attention. It will happen when the time is right.
  9. Either alone, or with a single friend, cozy in and watch a movie–extra butter on the popcorn.
  10. Remember that Valentines Day is a marketers dream and its about making money and selling the fantasy.

Leave me a comment about your Valentine’s Day memories… were they all good?

Have You Missed Me?

My posts have been sporadic of late, but that’s been a good thing. It simply means I’m busy with other work.

I also discovered I needed a bit of a break and February seemed to be the best time in which to make that happen.

As you can see, I’m still blogging and postings, but not quite as often.

Hi! Remember me?

I currently have a lot of sticks in the fire. Besides my blogs, I also write fiction, I am an organizational partner in the Wine Country Writers’ Festival, and I’m a mom, auntie, and wife.

Right now my work priority is my fiction.

My current book is now with my agent and undergoing some edits. My fingers are crossed that it gets picked up by a publishing house. It’s a contemporary women’s suspense novel. I have a very good feeling about it and am hopeful. As soon as I know anything, I’ll let you know.

Soon, my husband and I will hit the road to do some camping, hiking, and exploring. My posts may be sporadic then too, but I’m never far away.

Newsletters

Since I’m not blogging as often make sure you watch your email for the newsletter. If you haven’t signed up yet, please do so. It’s in the newsletter where I’ll share the exciting stuff or keep you in the loop about life. Well, okay maybe not life, but it’ll be something good I promise.
